Speed comes from recognition, not calculation. You don't calculate "2+2", you just know it's 4. The goal of Vedic Math is to make "98 × 97" as obvious as "2+2".
Drill 1: Base Method
Practice numbers near 10, 100, 1000.
See 105? Think "+5".
See 96? Think "-4".
Drill 2: Squares
Memorize squares up to 25.
Use tricks for 50s (25+x) and numbers ending in 5.
