Flag Method

The "Master Formula" for Straight Division.

Core Concepts

The Flag Method (Dhwajanka) is the most powerful division technique in Vedic Math. It allows you to divide any number by any number in a single line!

The Setup

1. Split the Divisor: The first digit is the "Pole" (Main Divisor). The rest are the "Flag" (Multiplier).
2. Split the Dividend: Separate the last digit for the Remainder.
3. Process: Divide by the Pole, then subtract (Flag × Quotient) from the remainder.

Solved Examples

Example 1: 123 ÷ 12

Question: Solve 123 ÷ 12.

• Setup: Divisor 12. Pole = 1, Flag = 2.

• Step 1: 1 ÷ 1 = 1. Remainder 0.

• Step 2: Next dividend part is 02 (0 from rem, 2 from dividend). Subtract Flag×Q (2×1=2). 2-2=0.

• Step 3: Next is 3. 3 ÷ 1 = 3. Remainder 0.

• Answer: Q: 10, R: 3.

Example 2: 45 ÷ 11

Question: Solve 45 ÷ 11.

• Setup: Divisor 11. Pole = 1, Flag = 1.

• Step 1: 4 ÷ 1 = 4. Remainder 0.

• Step 2: Next is 5. Subtract Flag×Q (1×4=4). 5-4=1.

• Answer: Q: 4, R: 1.

Example 3: 26 ÷ 12

Question: Solve 26 ÷ 12.

• Setup: Divisor 12. Pole = 1, Flag = 2.

• Step 1: 2 ÷ 1 = 2. Remainder 0.

• Step 2: Next is 6. Subtract Flag×Q (2×2=4). 6-4=2.

• Answer: Q: 2, R: 2.

Example 4: 39 ÷ 13

Question: Solve 39 ÷ 13.

• Setup: Divisor 13. Pole = 1, Flag = 3.

• Step 1: 3 ÷ 1 = 3. Remainder 0.

• Step 2: Next is 9. Subtract Flag×Q (3×3=9). 9-9=0.

• Answer: Q: 3, R: 0.
