Division by 9

The "Add and Go" Method.

Core Concepts

Dividing by 9 is magical in Vedic Math. You don't need to do long division! You just need to add the digits from left to right.

The Rule

To divide a number by 9:

1. Write down the first digit. This is the first digit of your Quotient.
2. Add this to the next digit. This is the next digit of your Quotient.
3. Continue until the last digit. The final sum is your Remainder.

Solved Examples

Example 1: 12 ÷ 9

Question: Solve 12 ÷ 9.

• Step 1: First digit is 1 (Quotient).

• Step 2: Add 1 + 2 = 3 (Remainder).

• Answer: Q: 1, R: 3.

Example 2: 121 ÷ 9

Question: Solve 121 ÷ 9.

• Step 1: First digit is 1.

• Step 2: 1 + 2 = 3.

• So far Quotient is 13.

• Step 3: 3 + 1 = 4 (Remainder).

• Answer: Q: 13, R: 4.

Example 3: 212 ÷ 9

Question: Solve 212 ÷ 9.

• Step 1: First digit is 2.

• Step 2: 2 + 1 = 3.

• Quotient is 23.

• Step 3: 3 + 2 = 5 (Remainder).

• Answer: Q: 23, R: 5.

Example 4: What if Remainder >= 9?

Question: Solve 45 ÷ 9.

• Step 1: First digit 4.

• Step 2: 4 + 5 = 9 (Remainder).

• Since Remainder is 9, we add 1 to Quotient and Remainder becomes 0.

• Quotient: 4 + 1 = 5. Remainder: 0.

• Answer: Q: 5, R: 0.
