LEVEL 3
Egyptian Division
How It Works
Step 1 — Build Doubling Table
Start with multiplier=1 and product=divisor. Keep doubling both until product exceeds the dividend.
Step 2 — Select Rows
Check rows from the bottom. Select rows whose products sum to the dividend (or as close as possible without going over).
Step 3 — Find Quotient
Add up the multiplier column of all selected rows. That sum is your quotient.
Step 4 — Calculate Remainder
Subtract the selected products sum from the dividend. That is the remainder.
Ancient Egypt Connection
This was used 3,500+ years ago! Egyptians only needed to add and double. The Rhind Papyrus shows this exact technique written in hieroglyphics.
Example: 85 ÷ 6
Select: 48 + 24 + 12 = 84 ✓
Quotient: 8 + 4 + 2 = 14
Remainder: 85 - 84 = 1
Answer: 14 R 1
